BUILDING 73.5

Building 73.5 logoHELP DEVELOP A PLAN FOR OUR SCHOOLS!

Last spring, more than 100 community members came together through the Building 73.5 workshops to begin shaping a plan for the future of Skokie 73.5 schools. This fall, those conversations continue as families, staff and neighbors are invited to come together again to work on the next steps to solve some of our biggest challenges. Together, we can make them safe, updated, and supportive for every student.

NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH

Colorful Hispanic Heritage Month graphic

Meyer is celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs September 15th through October 15th. During Meyer’s daily announcements, our Shining Stars learn about an important Latine American each day. So far, some of the important people we have learned about are Millo Castro Zaldarriaga, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Antonia Novello, and Jose Andres.

OCTOBER IS SOCKTOBER

Socks on feet in a circleDuring the month of October, Meyer School will celebrate Socktober. We will be collecting new socks to be donated to the Niles Township Clothing Closet. Students can bring in NEW socks of any size, which will be donated at the end of the month. Last year, we donated over 1,000 pairs of socks!

We want to show our Meyer Shining Stars that even the smallest acts of love, like donating a pair of socks, can make a big difference in the lives of our neighbors in need. We will begin collecting socks on Wednesday, October 1st.

Students can also show their support by celebrating Wacky Socks Wednesdays! Get your wacky socks ready to wear on every Wednesday in October!

ABC PEN PALS

Ms. Lancioni’s and Mrs. Mpistolarides’s classes are taking part in an exciting nationwide project to bring the alphabet to life! They have partnered with 26 other kindergarten classrooms across the country to be ABC pen pals. Each class is assigned a different letter, and students create a craft and letter to share with each of their penpal schools. In return, our students will receive a letter, and by November, they’ll have a full alphabet created by friends from all over the country.

This project not only builds letter recognition and fine motor skills, but also gives our students a chance to connect with peers beyond our own community. Ms. Lancioni’s class made the letter "Y," while Mrs. Mpistolarides’s class made the letter "K."

PBIS FAMILY CONNECTION: ZONES OF REGULATION

Picture of the blue, green, yellow, and red Zone of RegulationAt Meyer, we learn about the ZONES OF REGULATION, a program designed to help children identify and self-regulate their emotions. We learn about four different zones: blue, green, yellow, and red:

  • When you are in the blue zone, you may feel sad, bored, tired, or sick.
  • When you are in the green zone you feel calm and happy. When you’re in the green zone, you do your best learning.
  • When you are in the yellow zone you might feel scared, silly, worried, excited, or frustrated.
  • When you are in the red zone, you might feel mad or out of control.

Pictogram of calm down strategiesWe also teach students to pick a calm down strategy to help them get back to the green zone, so that they are calm and ready to learn.

It is important to note that everyone experiences all of the zones and that the blue, red, and yellow zones are not “bad” zones. All of the zones are expected at one time or another.

At home, you can help your child gain awareness of his or her zones and feelings by pointing out when you see them experiencing feelings at home. “It looks like you are feeling sad and in the blue zone because you are frowning.” You can also have your child choose a strategy that they can use at home to return to the green zone, if they are ever in the blue, yellow, or red zone.

MIDDLETON NEWS

blue and white Pride Paw cardStudents at Middleton are working to earn 1,500 Pride Paws as a building! Students earn a Pride Paw shout out card for demonstrating Respectful, Responsible, and Ready Bulldog Behavior around school. When a student earns that Pride Paw, their homeroom teacher keeps a tally, and sends the card home with the student so they may share their positive contribution to our school community with you at home.

Our 5th graders will soon be taking a survey to select the next whole-school incentive we are working towards. Stay tuned!

SYMPHONIC BAND PERFORMANCE

Middleton 3rd-5th graders were treated to an incredible performance by the McCracken Symphonic Band on Wednesday this week. McCracken students demonstrated the different instruments students may choose from if they sign up for band. We enjoyed seeing former students, big brothers and sisters, and the K-Pop Marimba piece that turned into a sing along! Thank you to Mr. DeStefano and Mr. Mendoza for organizing this event, our 6th-8th grade students for an outstanding performance, and to our Buildings & Grounds team for all the set up, transportation, and tear down!

McCRACKEN NEWS

ALL SCHOOL READ BOOK AUTHOR VISIT

On Friday, September 26th, McCracken celebrated literacy and our All School Read book, It Wasn’t Me by Dana Alison Levy. Students read the book over the summer and have engaged in a variety of literacy activities in the classroom this school year. For the first time ever, we welcomed the author of our All School Read book to McCracken to host an all school welcome assembly and individual grade-level assemblies throughout the school day. There was even an opportunity for members of the All School Read Student Committee to enjoy a special pizza lunch with the author. Students could also have copies of the book signed by Ms. Levy by bringing them to the Learning Center before Friday. Thank you for encouraging your students to read daily and for supporting our All School Read school community event!

PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCE SIGN-UP

Teachers look forward to connecting with families about their child’s learning and growth during Parent Teacher Conferences in October! Families have the opportunity to conference with teachers over Zoom or in person on October 9th and 10th. Due to the number of students that McCracken teachers serve, the conference time constraints do not allow enough appointment slots to schedule every family for all classes. In an effort to distribute appointments equitably among middle school families, McCracken uses the following process to increase access to conferences with middle school teachers:

  • Families may schedule up to three appointments with McCracken teachers when registration opened at 7:00 a.m. on SEPTEMBER 25th.
  • The appointment limit will be removed on SEPTEMBER 28th. Families may sign up for additional conferences with available teachers until registration closes on OCTOBER 7th at 3:00 p.m.
  • Families are encouraged to use PowerSchool as a resource to check academic progress and prioritize the specific classes they are most interested in connecting with a teacher to discuss. It is not mandatory to connect with each teacher during conferences in middle school.
  • Conferences are twice a year in October and February. Families are encouraged to reach out throughout the school year with any questions related to their child’s performance.

PICTURE DAY

Lifetouch logoMcCracken Picture Day is coming on Thursday, October 9th! You can place your order on mylifetouch.com using Picture Day ID EVT2TF2JG. Order before midnight on Picture Day to get FREE shipping!

Your child can also bring their completed flyer with cash or check on Picture Day. Orders after Picture Day must be placed online only on mylifetouch.com.

EXTRACURRICULAR PROGRAMMING UPDATE

Here at McCracken, we are proud to offer a variety of student athletic and enrichment programs. These programs allow students to exercise their strengths, tackle areas of growth, and socialize with peers. Be sure to sign your student up for one of our great extracurricular clubs or activities at McCracken! Updated registration and fee information is now available. Please view the fall presentation and access the McCracken Extracurricular Brochure below.

McCRACKEN ARRIVAL/SAFETY DISMISSAL REMINDERS

Please help us to keep our students, staff, families and visitors safe by following our arrival and dismissal procedures. Parents and guardians who drive their student(s) to or from school must use the Circle Drive off of East Prairie Road.

  • Parents and guardians must enter the Circle Drive near the south entrance on East Prairie Road, staying on the right side of the drive for pick-up or drop-off (leave the outside lane open to exiting cars at all times). Do NOT drop off or pick up your student in the left lane.
  • The Drive-Thru is for right lane drop-off and pick-up only. Do not park in the Drive-Thru lane. Please help to keep our students and staff safe at all times!
  • Drivers should NOT enter the Circle Drive coming north off East Prairie. Please enter the drop off or pick up line driving south on East Prairie Road.
  • Students may NOT walk through the back parking lot for any reason due to traffic.
  • Students must exit school property immediately following dismissal and may not stay to congregate with peers outdoors unless involved in an extracurricular activity.
  • Crossing guards are available to assist students crossing Oakton Street and Crawford Avenue and also on East Prairie Road and Warren Street.
  • Students may NOT cross the street at East Prairie Road and Oakton Street unless accompanied by a parent/guardian. There is no crosswalk or crossing guards at this intersection and there is a high volume of traffic.

ACTIVITY BUS

McCracken offers an activity bus for our students who participate in after-school activities. Some important notes about our activity bus:

  • The activity bus runs every day after school.
  • On Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, the activity bus boards at 3:55 p.m. in the bus alley.
  • On Tuesday (early 2:00 p.m. release day), the activity bus boards at 3:00 p.m. in the bus alley.
  • The activity bus runs a limited route that will differ from the morning and afternoon routes and stops. Families can view the stops HERE. All students riding the activity bus need to know what stop is the closest and best stop for them. Students should review this route plan with their families before riding the activity bus.
  • Many of our clubs/activities end at 3:55 p.m. Some of our activities run beyond 3:55 p.m. and students participating in these activities should not plan to take the activity bus home. Please arrange for alternate transportation home.
  • There is an annual $25 Activity Bus Fee for students to ride the activity bus. Payment is due no later than October 15th. Payments can be made through RevTrak. Once the payment has been received, students will receive an activity bus pass.

HIRING & RETENTION. We will recruit, hire, and retain a diverse workforce and improve our human resource processes, procedures, and materials.

INFRASTRUCTURE & FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY. All financial decisions and investments will meet the needs of our diverse learners and staff and promote academic and social growth. We will provide a safe, inclusive, flexible, and innovative space for teaching, learning, and growing.

TEACHING & LEARNING. All students will engage in learning experiences that are cohesive and articulated across PreK-8, flexibly designed to engage all learners and leading to rigorous outcomes for all. We will be a future-focused, real-world learning environment that is responsive, accessible, and meaningful for all. We will become a model district on the use of data for making instructional, curriculum, and programmatic decisions.

Equity Mission Statement

WE BELIEVE that inclusivity and belonging is the foundation for equity.

ALL CHILDREN CAN LEARN, at high achievement levels, when equity is infused into every aspect of education.

WE ACKNOWLEDGE the systemic inequities present in school systems and recognize the impact they continue to have on marginalized communities.

WE COMMIT to teaching, learning, and growing in order to identify and dismantle inequitable systems and to create a community where barriers are removed so that everyone can reach their full potential.

WE BELIEVE that students succeed when they can see themselves represented in our staff, curriculum, opportunities, and our shared environment. We accomplish this through professional development, curriculum revision, community engagement, and systems evaluations.

WE RECOGNIZE the need to teach our students to identify the origins of unjust systems and empower them to use their critical thinking skills and agency to responsibly disrupt the policies and practices that perpetuate inequalities.
