DISTRICT NEWS

HALLOWEEN REMINDER

Halloween is on Tuesday, October 31st. As a reminder, Skokie School District 73.5 does not observe Halloween during the school day. Students and staff are not permitted to wear costumes or distribute candy. The decision to replace traditional Halloween celebrations with a Fall Fest was made by the Board of Education Equity Committee in the fall of 2022 to create a welcoming activity that all students could enjoy together. Please see Superintendent Hightower's October 20th reminder to the Skokie73.5 school community, which includes a link to background information originally shared on September 26, 2022.

COFFEE & CONVERSATION WITH THE SUPERINTENDENT

Dr. Hightower's next Coffee & Conversation with the Superintendent is scheduled for Thursday, November 2, 2023, at 8:45 a.m. Click or tap the flyer and then the RSVP link to let us know you're coming and then meet us in Room 110 at Middleton.

MEYER NEWS

SOCKTOBER is coming to an end on Tuesday, October 31st! Thank you to all the families who have donated new socks for the Niles Township Clothing Closet! We will share our final count in next week’s Meyer Weekly.

leavesMeyer Shining Stars will have a FALL CELEBRATION in their classrooms during the week of November 13th. Your child's classroom teachers will provide more information about their plans for this celebration as the date approaches. Skokie73.5 does not celebrate Halloween in an effort to be inclusive and so that all students may participate in our celebrations. Students should not wear costumes of any sort on Halloween and will need to change out of them if they come to school in costume. Thanks for your help in making our district a welcoming and inclusive place!

Photo of school picturesMeyer’s PICTURE RETAKES are scheduled for Thursday, November 9th. If you would like for your child to retake their school picture, please send their Lifetouch picture packet back to school with them on November 9th. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher or the Meyer Office at 847-673-1223.

Picture of clothingEMERGENCY CLOTHING REMINDER. At the beginning of the school year, we asked every student to bring a complete set of spare clothing to keep at school in case of an emergency. With cooler weather, the extra clothing in your child's locker may no longer be warm enough for our current temperatures. Please send extra fall clothing as needed, including a long-sleeved shirt, long pants, socks, and underwear, clearly marked with your child's name. Thank you!

Picture of outdoor clothingDRESSING FOR OUTDOOR RECESS. As we head into colder temperatures, please start to gather appropriate outerwear, such as a warm coat, hat, gloves, scarf, winter boots, and snow pants. As long as it is not raining, we will go outside for recess. In general, if it “feels” like 15 degrees or above and it is not raining/snowing, we will go outside. Please see the Child Care Weather Watch chart that we use to guide our decisions.

Meyer school nurse, Mrs. Katie Orleans, will conduct HEARING AND VISION SCREENINGS for all students at Meyer during the month of November. Parents will be notified only if results require a follow up with an outside healthcare professional.

Lil' ChampOUTDOOR RECESS WEATHER REMINDERS. Students participate in outdoor recess throughout the school year, unless there is a significant weather-related or other external factor that necessitates an indoor program. All Skokie73.5 schools use the Child Care Weather Watch system to determine students’ participation in outdoor recess. This guide uses a combination of temperature and wind speed to calculate year-round weather safety for our students. Thank you, in advance, for helping to ensure that your child is prepared with appropriate outerwear for recess so that they are comfortable during our outdoor programming! Students should have warm coats, hats, gloves,  snow pants, and boots when there is snow on the ground.

Middleton's 5th GRADE WHITE PINES TRIP was a huge success! Students enjoyed time orienteering with compasses, digging for fossils, learning about echolocation through tag games, riding horses, going on an extended hike through a canyon, free time, fun meals, and more! See some photo memories below!

No Place for Hate logoThis year, McCracken is registered to become a NO PLACE FOR HATE school. No Place for Hate (NPFH) is the Anti-Defamation League's nationwide program designed to support schools that are committed to inclusivity, respect, and equity. We are hoping to earn the official designation this school year. Students and staff had the opportunity to participate in reciting and signing the McCracken No Place For Hate pledge during advisory on Tuesday. We would like to recognize each student, staff member, and families who are committed to treating one another with respect and make an effort to create a safe and welcoming learning environment at McCracken!

Photo of Ollie the HornetOCTOBER SPOTLIGHT ON SUCCESS. McCracken students are eligible to earn a wide variety of acknowledgements for their accomplishments in school! This includes Spotlight on Success, which recognizes students’ academic growth and achievement. Each month, teachers celebrate the many students who have demonstrated academic success in each grade level to honor them for making progress toward learning standards, meeting or extending learning standards, demonstrating great interest in a particular subject area, and/or demonstrating a growth mindset. Students are featured in our morning announcements, receive a certificate in person and by mail, and are delivered a fun incentive by staff, administration, and our school mascot with our Ollie Trolley! Congratulations to our October Spotlight on Success recipients!

OUTDOOR RECESS WEATHER REMINDERS. Students participate in outdoor recess throughout the school year unless there is a significant weather-related or other external factor that necessitates an indoor program. Here at McCracken, we use the Child Care Weather Watch system to determine students' participation in outdoor recess. This guide uses a combination of temperature and wind speed to calculate year-round weather safety for our students. Thank you, in advance, for helping to ensure that your child is prepared with appropriate outerwear for recess so that they are comfortable during our outdoor programming! Families in need of outerwear for their child should contact administration for additional resources.

Absences add up!ATTENDANCE REMINDERS. Did you know that missing two days of school a month, over the course of a school year, can affect a student's academic success? Please help us make school attendance a priority! HIRING & RETENTION. We will recruit, hire, and retain a diverse workforce and improve our human resource processes, procedures, and materials.

INFRASTRUCTURE & FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY. All financial decisions and investments will meet the needs of our diverse learners and staff and promote academic and social growth. We will provide a safe, inclusive, flexible, and innovative space for teaching, learning, and growing.

TEACHING & LEARNING. All students will engage in learning experiences that are cohesive and articulated across PreK-8, flexibly designed to engage all learners and leading to rigorous outcomes for all. We will be a future-focused, real-world learning environment that is responsive, accessible, and meaningful for all. We will become a model district on the use of data for making instructional, curriculum, and programmatic decisions.

Equity Mission Statement

WE BELIEVE that inclusivity and belonging is the foundation for equity.

ALL CHILDREN CAN LEARN, at high achievement levels, when equity is infused into every aspect of education.

WE ACKNOWLEDGE the systemic inequities present in school systems and recognize the impact they continue to have on marginalized communities.

WE COMMIT to teaching, learning, and growing in order to identify and dismantle inequitable systems and to create a community where barriers are removed so that everyone can reach their full potential.

WE BELIEVE that students succeed when they can see themselves represented in our staff, curriculum, opportunities, and our shared environment. We accomplish this through professional development, curriculum revision, community engagement, and systems evaluations.

WE RECOGNIZE the need to teach our students to identify the origins of unjust systems and empower them to use their critical thinking skills and agency to responsibly disrupt the policies and practices that perpetuate inequalities.
