August 21, 2022

Dear Skokie District 73.5 Parents,

I hope you have enjoyed your summer vacation with your children. Please plan to join us for the District 73.5 Back to School Bash this Sunday, August 21st from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the McCracken field.

In a few days, our teachers will welcome our students back to school. This is always an exciting time!

As we prepare to return to class, I have some updates about our COVID-19 protocols for the 2022-2023 school year.

The Centers for Disease Control no longer recommends that school districts conduct weekly COVID testing. This recommendation is supported by the  Illinois Department of Public Health and the Skokie Health Department.

Our district will maintain our partnership with SHIELD. Parents who want their children to participate in SHIELD Testing must submit the OPT-IN form

We will continue to offer SHIELD Testing for the following reasons:

  • We will have support in place if there is an increase in cases.
  • Some families feel safer knowing their child will be tested weekly.

Changes in COVID protocols:

  • Students are no longer required to quarantine if they are in close contact with a positive COVID case.
  • Close contacts must wear a mask for 10 days after exposure.
  • We will no longer offer Test-to-Stay.
  • The COVID-19 Information & Metrics Dashboard will be removed from our website. The decrease in the number of students testing could inadvertently expose students’ health status, which is a violation of HIPAA rules.
  • The lunchroom plexiglass partitions have been removed.
  • Social distancing is no longer required.

View more information from the Illinois Department of Public Health about SHIELD testing.

Our district is scheduled to begin testing the week of September 12th. The testing schedule for schools is as follows:

  • Meyer School: Wednesday
  • Middleton School: Wednesday
  • McCracken School: Monday

There have been inquiries on how the saliva test will be administered. This VIDEO demonstrates  how saliva is collected.

Next steps for Parents/Guardians:

  • Those who are interested in having their student(s) tested must complete the OPT-IN form.

Sincerely,

Dr. Zipporah Hightower
