Athletics

Oliver McCracken Middle School offers a comprehensive athletic program. Students are encouraged to listen to morning announcements, and parents should check The Weekly for tryout dates and information. Please check with the school nurse to be sure the school has your current physical, athletic permit, and Concussion Information forms on file. All are required for tryouts.

Basketball
Grades 6-8

  • Boys: January to beginning of March
  • Girls: End of October to December
  • Cost: $110 Varsity, $83 Junior Varsity, $55 6th Grade team

Varsity and Junior Varsity teams compete in 10 games, and 6th grade teams play 5 games. Practices focus on offensive and defensive formations and skill development.

Cheerleading
Grades 7-8

  • Season: January to beginning of March
  • Cost: $110 Varsity and Junior Varsity

Cheerleaders help motivate fans to show their school spirit by leading cheers during Varsity and Junior Varsity Boys' Basketball games. Cheerleading practices are scheduled 2 to 3 times a week after school. Look here for more information, including squad expectations and guidelines for academic and personal behavior.

Soccer
Grades 6-8

  • Boys: September to October
  • Girls: End of March to May
  • Cost: $110 Varsity, $83 Junior Varsity

Our soccer teams divide their time after school between practices and game play. There are 10 games during the season. Teams focus on teamwork and skill development.

Volleyball
Grades 6-8

  • Boys: April to May
  • Girls: September to October
  • Cost: $110 Varsity, $83 Junior Varsity

Volleyball teams practice regularly after school and compete in 10 games during the season. Players focus on developing skills through practice drills and team play.

Wrestling
Grades 6-8

  • Season: November through February
  • Cost: Free

Develop mental strength, self-esteem, sportsmanship, work ethic, and leadership skills. Participants will focus on wrestling fundamentals and safe, basic techniques. No equipment is needed.


Enrichment Programs

We are pleased to offer a variety of extracurricular opportunities! Please note that some activities have a limited number of student participants, and others are subject to cancellation if too few students enroll.

Art Crew
Grades 6-8

  • Wednesdays from 3:05 to 3:55 p.m.
  • Cost: $50

Art Crew is an activity for students who enjoy creating art and helping in the art room. Participants will help stage crew construct and paint the set for the musical so that interested students can participate in both activities. Sign up for Art Crew if you'd like to draw, paint, cut, paste, build, sculpt, print, and work with clay!

Concert, Intermediate & Symphonic Bands
Grades 6-8

  • All school year
  • Cost: $50

Students participate in our band program, both during the school day and before school, and perform a variety of concerts throughout the year.

Garden Club
Grades 6-8

  • Fall dates: TBD
  • Spring dates: TBD 
  • Cost: Free

Please join McCracken students after school a few days this fall to continue working in the McCracken school garden. We will be harvesting crops and putting the beds to sleep for their long winter's nap. Students can come whenever they are free. 

Helping Hornets
Grades 6-8

  • Mondays from 3:05 to 3:55 p.m.
  • Cost: Free

Helping Hornets is a student volunteer group that helps McCracken teachers and staff. From designing bulletin boards to re-shelving books in the Learning Center, join us to help beautify our school.

Homework Lab
Grades 6-8

  • Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 3:05 to 3:55 p.m.
  • Cost: Free

Homework Lab provides academic support for students missing homework or a long-term project. Students may be assigned to attend Homework Lab by their teacher(s). Students may self-refer and attend if seats are available.

Learning Center
Grades 6-8

  • Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 3:05 to 3:55 p.m.
  • Cost: Free

Students are welcome to visit the Learning Center after school for a quiet and supervised place to study. Computers are available.

Running Club
Grades 6-8

  • Meeting times/dates: Mondays and Thursdays from 3:05 to 3:55 p.m. (Spring)
  • Cost: $50

Here is your chance to challenge yourself physically and mentally. Join us for your chance to exercise, train and even participate in a local 5k run/walk. Remember every journey starts with a single step.

School Musical
Grades 6-8

  • August to November
  • Cost: $50

Students participate in auditions during the first month of school. Cast members learn songs and choreography for the November performance. Students interested in joining Stage Crew are encouraged to contact Ms. Keipert.

Social Justice Club
Grades 6-8

  • First Wednesday of each month from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m.
  • Cost: Free

Celebrate diversity, learn about global issues and discover the power of activism with the Social Justice Club!  We will explore opportunities to make the world a better place for everyone.

Student Council
Grades 6-8

  • Wednesdays from 7:20 to 7:45 a.m.
  • Cost: Free

Students represent their advisory peers as part of the school's student-led council. Share ideas, plan dances, and help support McCracken!

Swing Choir
Grades 7-8

  • December to May
  • Wednesdays before school at 7:10 a.m.; Mondays after school from 3:10 to 4:30 p.m.
  • Cost: $50

Swing Choir is a tryout-based program featuring a competitive performance group, available to students already participating in a year-long chorus class. Swing Choir performs Jazz, Broadway, and Pop favorites with group choreography. Listen to the announcements and read the McCracken Weekly online for audition information.

Writer's Club
Grades 6-8

  • Wednesdays from 3:05 to 3:55 p.m.
  • Cost: Free

The Writers' Club meets to cultivate members' creative writing abilities, to explore publishing opportunities, and to create the annual issue of Murmur, the literary magazine for all of McCracken's writers and artists

Yearbook
Grade 8

  • Mondays from 3:05 to 3:55 p.m.
  • Cost: $50

Join the yearbook staff to help capture McCracken memories. Students take the pictures, design the layout, create the artwork, and develop the McCracken yearbook using an online program.
