Social Work Team
We are so excited to introduce to you our 2015-2016 social work team.Jennifer Gregg, our full-time social worker, has just started her 10th year here at Middleton. We are happy to have Jennifer back with us this year. She is an integral part of the Middleton team, and heads up a number of initiatives in the building, including the Gilbert Garden Club. In Addition to Ms. Gregg, this year we welcome three new members to our social work team. Theresa Gabby will join us as our part-time social worker. Theresa completed her Masters Degree in Social Work at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Ms. Gabby has experience working as a school social worker in the public school system, therapeutic school and private practice. Theresa Gabby will be at Middleton on Tuesdays, Wednesday afternoons and Fridays. We also have two social work interns; Alexis Linn and Kara Zenni join us from the University of Chicago social work program. Our interns will be at Middleton on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Free And Reduced Lunch Information
In order to be eligible for the Free/Reduced Lunch Program for 2015-2016, you must complete an application. Applications are available in the School Office and on our website. Families who were approved for the Free/Reduced Lunch program last year must apply again this year. The deadline is September 30. If you do not apply by September 30, 2015, you will be charged for lunches. If you have any questions, please call Elle Karagianes at 847.676.8317.
After School Enrichment Program
Enrichment brochures went home earlier this week. Extra copies are available in the Middleton Office. Enrichment forms and fees are due Tuesday, September 8, 2015. If you are using checks as payment, please make the check payable to District 73.5. If you have any questions, please contact Enrichment Coordinator Kimberly Davis by email.
Middleton students will participate in short screening assessments. Students in 1st through 5th grade will participate in Reading-Curriculum Based Measure (RCBM) and Math Computation (MCOMP) the week of September 8. First grade students will participate in the Illinois Snapshot of Early Literacy (ISEL) the week of September 14. Following this data collection period, school teams will meet to review the data and plan for any students needing supplemental support as they begin the school year. Test results will be sent home to families later in the Fall. Each family received a Student Handbook. Please read through the handbooks with your child and then sign and return the corresponding form.

Good Neighbor Policy
As the new school year is underway, please be reminded that we are lucky to be a neighborhood school located in a lovely community. With that, we ask that you take the following into consideration when dropping-off/picking-up students, or visiting our school:
- Please be mindful of posted speed limits. St. Louis Avenue and the surrounding side streets are narrow, and students, families and community members are often crossing these streets as they make their way to work and school.
- Please use caution when walking through the park while construction of the new playground is taking place.
- Please obey all posted parking signs.
- Please avoid walking across the lawns of our neighbors.
- Please do not litter or leave trash on sidewalks, yards or alleyways.
Thank you for your attention to these matters.
Traffic Pattern / Drop-Off / Pick-Up
Please remember to follow procedures when dropping off or picking up children from school. We want to make sure that everyone is safe!
Cars dropping off students must enter westbound on Madison Street and enter St. Louis Avenue heading northbound. You will then turn left into Drake Alley, where children should be dropped off in the circle drive. Cars will then exit northbound on Drake Avenue and head eastbound on Main Street.
Please note the following:
- Cars may begin lining up for morning drop off starting no earlier than 8:00 a.m.
- Cars may begin lining up for afternoon pick-up starting no earlier than 2:30 p.m. (1:30 p.m. on Tuesday)
- There will be no turning southbound onto St. Louis Avenue during drop-off and pick-up times. Additionally, you are only allowed to turn right on Main Street when exiting Drake Avenue.
- Please obey posted signs, or risk being ticketed by the Village of Skokie Police.
- Cars may not enter St. Louis Avenue or Drake Alley by way of the alley between Trumbull and St. Louis Avenue.
- Please be mindful of neighbors who may be exiting their parking spaces or garages during drop-off or pick-up times.
- Please do not leave your car idling while waiting in line.
Annual Asbestos Management Plan Notice
It has been determined by the Illinois Department of Public Health and the Federal Environmental Protection Agency that asbestos is a potential health hazard, and precautions should be taken to avoid disturbing any asbestos containing materials. As required, our building(s) were initially inspected for asbestos and a Management Plan completed on May 1989. The Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act requires that a visual surveillance of asbestos containing areas be completed every six months and a re-inspection conducted every three years. Any evidence of disturbance or change in condition is documented in the Management Plan as required. The Management Plan is available for public review at the District Office, 8000 East Prairie Road, Skokie, IL. Should you wish to review the plans, please call to make an appointment between 8:00 a.m and 4:30 p.m. Any concerns relative to asbestos containing materials should be directed to Mr. Steve Ruelli at 846.676.8227.
