Tips For Walking Safely To School

Walking to school is fun, and a great way to get exercise, but children need to be safe when doing it. Please review these tips with your child to make sure that they get to and from school without any problems:

  • Walk with a friend or group when possible.
  • Review the safest routes to and from school.
  • When you are near the street, don't push, shove, or chase each other.
  • Never accept rides from people you don't know.
  • Talk to your parents and teachers about any bullying that may happen during your walk.
  • Wear bright-colored clothes and/or something reflective.
  • Obey traffic signs, signals and adult school crossing guards.
  • When crossing the street:
  1. Stop at the curb or edge of the street.
  2. Look left, right, left and behind you and in front of you for traffic.
  3. Wait until no traffic is coming before you begin crossing.
  4. Keep looking for traffic until you have finished crossing.
  5. Walk, don't run across the street.

Students reading booksPTA Scholastic Book Fair: Volunteers Needed

The Book Fair is coming to Middleton from November 16-24. An amazing selection of books is headed our way. This is an incredible fundraiser that put lots of new books into each classroom and we need your help! Please consider volunteering for a shift or two during the book fair by signing up here: http://vols.pt/Ucb623.

Skokie Public Library

Your children’s Skokie Public Library card provides them access to great resources. In addition to the many online databases like Britannica Online, TumbleBook Library for Kids and CultureGrams Online, they can check out eBooks. Electronic books (eBooks) can be viewed through a web browser or app, on a variety of devices such as iPads and Chromebooks. Try searching the Skokie Public Library catalog at home to see the many eBooks available. At school, our students will have the opportunity to access all the resources Skokie Public Library has to offer.

ELP Inquiry Window

Our Extended Learning Program provides honors classes for students in Math and English Language Arts in grades 4-8. Students qualify for these classes based on a variety of measures. Families are notified of this information in June (for class placement for the upcoming school year). Parents may complete a Parent Inquiry if they feel their child may benefit from a more rigorous curriculum. The Parent Inquiry window opens October 1 and remains open until April 1. Parent Inquiry paperwork is available in the main office of Middleton and McCracken, or by contacting your school’s Assistant Principal.

Yearbooks

It's time to order your 2015-2016 yearbook! What better way to remember this school year than with a yearbook for you and your child? These are memories you'll want to keep for years to come! The school yearbook costs $20 and is available for pre-order from now until December 18. Yearbooks will be distributed in May.

How to order: You may order online or return payment in the ordering envelope your child received at school. All checks should be made payable to HR Imaging. To order online, please visit book.hrimaging.com and select John Middleton Elem School.
