Welcome to Second Grade at Second grade is a very important year. Students become increasingly responsible for their own learning and independent in many ways. Second graders will read more complex books, write longer stories, and work on engaging science projects and math concepts. During this year a typical second-grader is learning to concentrate and focus more in class, and finds satisfaction in doing high quality school work. Students at this age are becoming better at reasoning and think critically. They are also learning how to successfully become a member of the group, both in the classroom and on the playground. It's a very important year, full of developmental and academic milestones. There is a lot of review in the beginning of second grade, so that the students truly master all the skills presented by their first grade teachers. In second grade the students learn and apply a variety of strategies, to enhance their understanding of what they read. Your child will also learn to compose more sophisticated sentences, and increase his/her reading and speaking vocabularies. Math becomes more logical and connected to use in real life. Your child will learn to add and subtract faster, committing basic math facts to memory. This is a very exciting year academically, and an important time for your child's development as a thinker and a learner. In second grade children continue to build a strong academic foundation. You can help your child succeed in school by doing the following EVERY EVENING: talking to them about their day, asking them to review information that is sent home in their folders, reading with them and to them, and asking questions about all of the books that they are reading. You can help your child by reviewing their math facts with them using flash cards as well as their math homework. Your sincere interest in your child's daily school activities helps your child feel important, and makes school an even more meaningful part of their lives. In second grade children will continue to learn more about being a good friend to others, a cooperative group member, and well-behaved in school. You can help by discussing the value of respect. Talk about how relationships work among friends and with teachers at school. With a little regular encouragement, most second graders are ready to take on the world! Looking forward to a wonderful year of learning!
